Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NLT)

"A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. THREE are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken."

3rd Grade Football Season Underway

It's official, tackle football has begun! This is the first year the boys suit up in pads and are allowed to tackle each other. The name of our team is the Wolverines and Dylan's jersey number is 10, just like my old Vikings favorite, Fran Tarkenton. Dave is one of the assistant coaches which Dylan really likes and their record is 1-0 since they won their first game this Saturday - WOOHOO! While I am hesitant on the tackling, Dylan is having fun, even if he is the lightweight of the team weighing in at a whopping 55 lbs. At least he has speed, a good arm, and is pretty good at defense. Can you believe some boys weigh 120 lbs in the league (what are they FEEDING these kids!!!)? Thank goodness they restrict boys who weigh 80+ lbs to the backfield. The coaches do a fantastic job of making sure the boys alternate positions. As with most boys, Dylan loves to run the ball and go for the touchdown but I am thankful the main focus is sportsmanship which is a good life lesson for all kids at any age. Dylan also enjoys suiting up at home almost daily to play outside with his friends or show off to visitors which is hysterical and a positive sign that he REALLY loves the game!

Back To School - 3rd Grade

It's that time of year again...back to school. The kids were excited to begin a new year. Not only are they in a new school with a new playground to be installed this fall, but they have two new 3rd grade teachers (Lindsey has one and Dylan has the other) whom we met and really like. Taylor has the returning 3rd grade teacher who is a favorite of so many students at Aspen. The best part is, Taylor is sitting right next to her best friend, Sarah, so she is VERY happy and excited!

They love their school, their friends and their teachers so it makes it so much easier on us parents. After all, Mama Bear is a cry baby and I have a hard time sending them on their way after sharing all summer together. Many tears were shed after I dropped them off yesterday in the carpool line but thankfully I got a BIG hug from each of them and they ran off with smiles plastered on their faces which were still there when they got home. God is good :)

Boundary Waters - Labor Day Wknd Getaway

For Labor Day weekend, Dave and I loaded up the kids on Thursday to join the Brigham family (and two other fun families we just met) and hit the road for northern MN. Our destination, BWCA, aka Boundary Waters Canoe Area. One word explains our experience.....OUTSTANDING! It was the kids and my first trip to BWCA but Dave has been there many times before so he was our "fearless leader" together with Derek, Lynn and Catherine (daughter of Smitty's Resort owner).

We stayed at Smitty's Resort on Snowbank Lake Thursday night and then "put the canoes in the water" bright and early Friday morning and canoed for a few hours out to a private island in the middle of Snowbank and set up camp for a two-night excursion. We had a perfect campsite with loads of trees and area for the kids to explore and fish. The other two families camped a little ways down from us on the same island. Their campsite was perfect for swimming since they had their own swimming bay complete with lots of gorgeous rock and boulders. We all enjoyed jumping off the big rocks  into the deep, crystal clear water beneath us (think cliff diving). SO FUN!!!

We had a fantastic time canoeing, fishing, swimming, listening to the call of the many loons, watching the eagles soar (they had a nest near our camp), campfires, cooking breakfast and dinner on the Coleman propane powered stovetop, laughing, singing and cheerleading (that would be Lynn and me :), exploring, whittling, and enjoying nature at its finest.

The weather was beautiful and sunny with the small exception of late Saturday evening thunder storms while we slept. But the tents held up nicely and everybody stayed warm and dry. We canoed back into Smitty's around 11am on Sunday and dealt with some wind, rough waters and light rain but it was manageable and we all survived. Sunday the Brighams and Clarks headed to AmericInn in Silver Bay for one night. We savored showers, swam in the pool, ordered in pizza, enjoyed the breathtaking views of Lake Superior from our balcony, and snuggled in to watch a few movies.

Life is good and we are grateful we got to experience such a memorable adventure together and will definitely go back again. Unfortunately, we didn't take that many photos since we were mainly on or in water the entire time which typically doesn't mix well with electronics. Here are just a few. Feel free to check out the Shutterfly link on this blog for a few more.
